چکیده

We define a fixed point topological charge for the two–dimensional O(3) lattice σ–model which is free of topological defects. We use this operator in combination with the fixed point action to measure the topological susceptibility for a wide range of correlation lengths. The results strongly suggest that it is not a physical quantity in this model. The procedure, however, can be applied to other asymptotically free theories as well. We discuss the calculation of electric and magnetic screening masses in SU(2) gauge theory. The temperature dependence of these masses obtained from the long-distance behaviour of spatial correlation functions has been analyzed for temperatures up to 10 4 Tc.

By placing fermions only on the even sites of a lattice, one may halve the momentum spectrum and construct a theory without doublers. The interaction is nonlocal. The fermion propagator is not a sparse matrix, but because the unwanted fermionic states are absent from the formalism, it is 256 times smaller than the usual propagator.

We suggest how to construct an effective low energy Hamiltonian via Monte Carlo starting from a given action. We test it by computing thermodynamical observables like average energy and specific heat for simple quantum systems.

Results from a calculation of the low-lying glueball spectrum of pure-gauge SU(3) are used as a test of the effectiveness of improved discretisation schemes in reducing finite spacing errors. Glueball masses are extracted from simulations on anisotropic lattices, where the temporal lattice spacing is much shorter than the spatial ones. This allows clearer resolution of the decay of glueball cor...
